The Coffee Is Really Good

By Leonardo Calcagno

AMSTERDAM! I've been to this city so many times...this city, where mostly everything is legal. This city, where dope, prostitution and partying all night long is a must. If you ever get the chance visit, the following is uPath's favorite coffee shops in which to chill and meet people from all over the world. Note: sorry if some of the coffee shops have no street name listed--but when you get to Amsterdam, go to any store that sells bongs or dope-related articles and you can pick up the Amsterdam Red Light District map for free.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Baba
Located on Warmoestraat, the Baba is sandwiched between sex shops, gay clubs and 24-hour live erotic shows in the Red Light District. A great place to chill in the confines of Middle Eastern/Indian dark wood furniture and dim lighting decor. Try the non-alcoholic bar and its 'space cakes'. The cannabis selection is decent. Try their 'Dutch Turbo Weed' and the bar's selection of imported hash. They used to have a great selection of bongs but most of them are broken.

Barney's Breakfast Bar
Located on Haarlemerstraat, ten minutes walking distance from the Central Station, the BBB is a great Irish joint with a great selection of high quality grass and an American-Irish style breakfast. BBB is one of the rare coffee shops that open at 8 am. Mellow music, a great breakfast and a large selection of hydro-grass -- this place is for those who like starting the morning easy and well fed!

Bluebird
The place to go if you want to taste everything, I mean everything! They have a huge selection of grass and hash that comes in two gigantic catalogues; one for cannabis and one for hash, with pictures and a brief description. One of the rare coffee shops to offer fresh sushi every Saturday at a reasonable price. The service is excellent and the quality of grass and hashish outstanding. This is one of the best coffee shops that Amsterdam has to offer.

Bulldog
The fast-food chain of coffee shops! The Bulldog owners have two coffee shops, a traveler's budget hotel, a café, a rent-a-bike and a souvenir shop called the Palace. So you know the service is standard. The selection of grass and hash, music and service sucks big time! It's like going to Wal-Mart for weed! I won't even give you their location--it just stinks.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

La Canna
Located on the Niewendijk, five minutes walking distance from Central Station. La Canna has an amazing souvenir mushroom shop with a couple of computers with Internet access and service is pretty good. But again the ganja selection is poor and grass/hash is very low quality. Beside an interesting décor, it's a painful experience to listen to top-40 Dutch pop while you're chilling.

Chocolata
Located on the Spuistraat, the Chocolata has a great selection of cakes and candies made out of grass. The beer is good too.

De Dampkring
A great psychedelic dim light Indian decor. This is one of the most popular and crowded coffee shops in Amsterdam, and a great place to get excellent grass/hash while you drink some Oranjeboom. Friendly service and with a great blend of tourists and locals. Got to try: Cybercitral or Soma, AK-47 and Kalimist, and for hash I personally recommend the Menala.

Global Chillage
Located on Kerkstraat 51, this is a small and relaxing bar that has a small choice of grass/hash but at the highest quality. Psychedelic Trance ambient spiritual crowd, the artwork is impressive mostly from India or related Punjab region.

Fatal Flower
Located on Stadhousederskade 46, if you looking for bright colors to chill while you're stoned, this is the place to meet some old and new hippy ravers just relaxing and listening to trance music. The grass here is one of the most muscle relaxing I ever encountered. Here you get a free 10-guilder bag of weed with every 25-guilder purchase.

Green House
Located on Tolstraat 91, Green House is a Cannabis Cup winner since '93, offering the very best service and great quality grass in Amsterdam. Trance and dark ambient music with a great selection of imported beer.

Kunst En Koffie
Located on Tweede Laurierdwarsstraat 64, this is a great place to go at night. You have a great view of the Jordaan canal, the best space cookies, and a lot of artists from all over Europe. And if you feel like net surfing, this is the place. Quality imported beer, coffee and grass. This place has a Beatnick "I don't know what," as the French say.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Lucky Mothers
Located on Keizersgracht 665 near the old canal house, this is a small and cozy tea/whisky bar to go and chill. Here, you will get the best mushroom tea ever! And if the munchies attack you, they have great Dutch cuisine on the menu!

Magic Mushroom Express
This is not a coffee shop, but if you are staying at a friend’s or renting a place, this is your delivery service for mushrooms, smart products, grass/hash and everything you need. And quality is outstanding. Daily service from 19:00 - 2:00 am. Phone: 06 54357135.

De Tweede Kamer
Located between the Single canal and the Spui, these guys specialize in high, high, quality foreign hash! The place is small but the view when you get to your seat is grandiossse. They make great grass tea and the music is a non-traditional transcendental experience. If you have never tasted good Moroccan hash, here is the best place for you to try or buy.

Grey Area
Located in a small street of the Singel Canal that is hard to miss, this is an American coffee shop that has a daily special for all their products, including a large variety of handmade glass bongs and top-quality grass. The crowd is a healthy mix of students and tourists. The only problem is this place is way to small and busy.

Dutch Flowers
Located by the Singel canal, this is a relaxing artsy dim light classic déco coffee shop. They have the best Bavarian beer in Amsterdam. It's a place that makes you feel like a Viking while you chill nicely. Top-quality choice of grass, but not much hash. Got to try Super Shiva and rolled weed cigars - Philly blunt- already made.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Hemp Hotel
Located on Frederiksplein 15; this is one of the rare hemp hotels in Amsterdam. Relaxed atmosphere, a great variety of hemp at the hotel bar and restaurant, the 'Hemp Temple Night Bar' offers THC hemp ice cream, hemp seed, and 11 kinds of hemp beer, wines, cider and non-alcoholic drinks with hemp. The theme déco in the suites are Indian, Afghani, Tibetan and Caribbean with hemp futons extremely comfortable. Room rates for a single are 100 guilders and 135 guilders for a double room with breakfast of fresh hemp rolls and muffins, orange juice and tea or coffee. Telephone for reservation: 31 20 625 44 25

T-Boot
Located on Oude Schans 143, this is the same boat taken by Cheech and Chong on their trip through Amsterdam.

Café Freeworld
Located on Nieuwendjik near Central Station, this is a cyber coffee shop with full Internet cable access. Enjoy one cold Dutch beer, smoking some great grass and surf the Net.

De Overkant
Located on Van Limburg Stirumplein, this is a relax déco friendly atmospheric coffee shop where people from all walks of life come to enjoy great Moroccan hash. The place is small but it's located in an obscure street where you can enjoy some smooth quality time in this crazy city.

Paradox
Located on Eerste Bloemdwarsstraat 2, a great place to have healthy snacks and drink some hashish coffee. Closes at 7pm.

La Tertulia
Located on Prinsengracht 312, this is one of my favorite coffee shops to go to in the summer, a great outdoor terrace to toast yourself when smoking and watch the canals. Great selection of grass/hash and space cakes freshly baked> But like Paradox, it closes at 7pm.

Yo-Yo
Located on 2e Jan van der Heydenstraat 79, a friendly down-to-earth coffee shop where mostly hippies go to chill and talk about their mantra psychedelic one world 60s renewal earth experience. The grass selection is very wide and quality one of the best if you end up in that part of town. It's a little bit far from the Red Light District... but a great place to meet travelers.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Free City
Located on Maxistraat 233, this is more of a bar than a coffee shop. Most coffee shops don't sell alcohol or stay open past 2am. Outstanding selection of beer and some good grass, you meet a lot of Irish, British and Germans. I've met a lot of crazy people that spend 15 days partying and forgetting their name!

De Hoogte
Located on Nieuwe Hoogstraat 2a, this is a busy bar in the Red Light District frequented by hippies, travelers, local and English-speaking tourist. Not really a coffee shop but sometimes you can grill while trying their amazing hot chocolate with Jameson's. It's a great nightcap!

Sound Garden
Located on Marnixstraat 164-66; this is a popular spacious grunge bar with a tattooed/pierced alternative crowd. Good selection of beer, pool table, darts and pinball. They don’t sell grass or hash, so bring your own.

So there you have it! A mini-guide of Amsterdam's 400+ coffee shops. Here’s also a list of squats where you can go party later on in the night.

Squats

Vrankrijk
Located on Spuistraat 216, open Mon-Fri, Sunday until 2am and Saturday 'till 4pm. Cheap drinks and a pool table, open stage comedy, great music, live performance every Sunday from 10:30 on...this squat is very popular 'cause you meet wasted people from all over the world with weird and incoherent theories about life, art and everything!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Korsakoff
Located on Lijnbaansgracht 161, a free entry popular punk-grunge bar open Mon-Sunday until 4am and Saturday 'till 5am. Obscure crowd mixing punks, gothic, alternative, hip-hop, gays and people just there to party and wait for Central Station to open.

The Fridge
Located on Oostelijke Handelskade 25, a squat veggie restaurant open very late, depending on the season and crowd. Raoul is the main veggie cook to visit when you go to Amsterdam. The food is grrrreat! and service amazing, not very expensive for a good meal and every week the decor changes depending his mood!

Lux
Located on Marnixtraat 403, open weekends from 8pm-4am, this is the best place to listen to great drum 'n' bass and trance DJs. Always crowed but the hard liquor selection is a wet dream!

New York Pizza
Located on Damstraat and Leidestraat 23, the best pizza in town 'cause you don't know how hard is to get great pizza in Amsterdam. NY knows their shit! Open 'till 4am Fri-Saturday, this is great for your late-night munchies, and the place to see Europeans trying eating a slice of pizza without getting messy!

Here is a useful address for those in Amsterdam:

De Witte Jas
Located on Wittenstraat 43-45, it’s a cheap and alternative clinic for travelers without insurance (but we strongly recommend getting travel health insurance before you go!). A lot of people freak out in Amsterdam, so take this address and locate it before any psychedelic activity.
