nternational Orange Spa (aka. IO) was named after the paint color on San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge. Since that time in June 2002, it has been gaining a reputation as the yoga and wellness spa for modern gals.
Housed in the affluent Pacific Heights area, International Orange is 4,200 square feet of pampering bliss. The space includes not only a full-service spa, but a large yoga studio with sunny floor-to-ceiling windows, men's and women's stream rooms, a lounge area with its own fireplace, and a gorgeous 700-square-foot redwood sundeck. The yoga studio offers from two to six classes daily ranging from Beginner Basics to Advanced Hatha.
"We wanted the space to be organic in the true tradition of Northern California living," owner Amy Darland says. "We used natural raw materials, kept the walls white, and incorporated long, white curtains to give the space a flowing feeling. A lot of spas are a bit kitschy and cluttered, and it was important to us to remain authentic."
Their spa menu is filled with results-driven treatments which, in keeping with the simple and straighforward approach, are all numbered. "The menu offers details without the flowery language that many spas use," says Darland. "We aren't saying, 'Let us take you to another planet and woo you.' We simply provide the facts and let the experience speak for itself."
Try one of their great Hot Stone Massages after a particularly taxing yoga session and feel the warmth soak in an loosen your sore muscles. We loved their Lomi Lomi massage and their all-natural facial (that came with a relaxing face massage).
The focus on attention-to-detail is apparent in every aspect at International Orange. From the aromatic flowers placed below the face cradle of the massage tables, to the cool eye pads soaked in cucumber water and the warm towels which smell like lemon-verbena, we felt like all our needs were taken care of. Oh yes, lest we forget: they also provided yummy chocolate truffles in the lounge. What more could we ask for?
