Five Must-See Foreign Flicks
By Bora Rhee
Foreign films have been making a name for themselves all over the world – especially in the last few years. Foreign films (like their locales) enchant us; and watching one is like seeing the world through a different set of eyes. It's a whole new experience to open ourselves up and explore different horizons and it's amazing what can be learnt about the world around us – you just have to be open to it. Here, we list five films that transport us and open us to new peoples and places. Don't be surprise if, after getting a few foreigns under your belt, you're just itching to travel the world!
5. Y Tu Mama Tambien. In one of the most honest depictions of adolescent discovery, this film is sensual, adventurous and sentimental – Latin-style! Bolstered by amazing actors and a superb soundtrack, Y Tu Mama Tambien (translation: And Your Mother Too) is a story about a married woman and two teenaged boys on a road trip in Mexico. Of course, this isn't the only premise. This film also scans the ups and downs of Mexico's socioeconomic ladder, reflecting the political and social situation at the time. Fresh, sexy and vibrant!
4. Amores Perros. Nearly three hours long, this film has a lot going on in it. But that doesn't mean you'll fall asleep. Quite the contrary! When translated, the title reads "Love's a Bitch." Rapid, pulse-y and gutsy, you won't notice the length of the film because it just zooms by. Instead, you’ will be preoccupied with the intertwining plots, great music and the intense romance permeating through the screen. Amores Perros is beautiful – the cinematography, the acting, the screenplay.
3. Amelie. Charming. Quirky. Cute. Amelie (played by the adorable Audrey Tatou) invites you to her sugary sweet, womblike world. Romantic and picturesque, this film is about Amelie, an introverted French girl who is out to improve the lives of those around her, only to have hers forever changed in the process. Creative and delightful, Amelie is sure to be a foreign classic.
2. Spirited Away. With the spawn of Japanese anime, Spirited Away is a fantastical adventure of one courageous ten-year old girl, Chihiro. In her quest to save her parents (who have been turned into pigs--don't ask!), Chihiro must give up her name (again, don't ask) and work in the new world that she finds herself. There is a profound, universal truth to the movie but you have to see it for yourself to realize it. Deeply touching and at times, emotional, Spirited Away will connect with audiences of all ages.
1. City of God. Poignant and truthful (based on a true story), this Brazilian export will satisfy even the most mainstream movie lover, and probably turn them onto foreign flicks for good. Take note of this film because it oozes talent and charisma. Brilliantly cast, the acting is grade A, the directing is to-die-for and the cinematography is breathtaking. Clever and intense, this film teaches us the futility of violence without losing its originality. It's not everyday that a film like this graces us with its presence.
