How to Live Happily Ever After

By Stephanie Dawe

Then Prince Charming kissed Snow White, she awoke and they lived happily ever after, pure and perfect, from now to forever. Reality check – life is no fairytale, but that doesn't mean you can't live happily ever after.

The truth is 43% of marriages end in divorce, 240,000 women will develop cancer in the U.S. alone, and 51% of people are pessimists. Pessimists are paralyzed by these harsh realities, whereas optimists believe that they won't end up as one of those statistics and if they do they feel they are strengthened by their struggles. Pessimists are skeptical about the point of suffering. As it turns out recent studies show that positive thinking can help improve your health.

Statistics show that optimists live an average of 7.5 years longer than pessimists, so you can enjoy your happily ever after longer. The way you perceive life's outcomes will determine your joy or despair, but can you learn the power of positive thinking? I researched and came up with 10 uplifting steps that lead to bliss.

  • The first step is crucial, CLARIFY: Clarify your life, and mind. Listen to your inner voice, hear what you have to say without the voices of the world influencing you mind. Once you hear what you want and what you don't, you can figure out how to get it and how to get rid of what you don’t. Once your mind is clear your thoughts will be clear and more positive.

  • Visualize it: Once your mind is clear, fill it with positive thoughts. Imagine good things happening, thinking is the first step to making things happen.

  • Refrain from complaining: Avoid pointless complaining and dwelling on other people's mistakes. Whining about other's difficulties will only leave negative thoughts to brew.

  • Recognize your opportunities: Put your life in your hands rather than feeling restrained by others or by circumstances. The world is your oyster, full of opportunities.

  • Believe in yourself: Dream big and then do it. Nothing in life will happen until you help it happen. Optimistic people realize that they are in control of their destiny and what happens next.

  • Be bold: Pessimists feel constrained and stuck in a rut, whereas optimists try new ways to get what they want, and take chances to MAKE something happen. Remember nothing happens until you make it happen.

  • Take charge: Take charge of what happens next for you and create the conditions to make it happen.

  • Two heads are better than one: Befriending positive people will help support, encourage and strengthen you and your goals.

  • Positive is as positive does: Practice optimism everyday; always look at the bright side of a bad situation. When a bad ordeal occurs tell yourself it happened for the best. A positive attitude will have a domino effect.

  • The final step is just as important as the first, COMMIT: Once you decide to change your life stick with it. Realize that optimism is not something that happens overnight, it is your ever after.

After these steps you are ready to fully surrender to yourself, because you are in control. I believe that the key to happiness for ever after lies within your ability to perceive life events through an optimistic view, but with 51% of people being labeled pessimists it's no surprise that most of us need help being optimistic.

The next time you face an unpleasant situation, like a disagreement with your boss, or a fight with your boyfriend and you have pessimistic thoughts, understanding that you are having pessimistic thoughts is the first step in stopping them. The next step is to occupy your mind, busying it will help keep negativity out. Tell yourself that life is not about luck, it is about self attitude.

The world is full of opportunities and endless possibilities and we can achieve almost anything we set our minds to. Yet the only way to make a notion a reality is through action. Take responsibility for yourself. What you are now is not it, you can always improve and continually grow.
