Keffiyeh Fashion Symbolizes Jihad?

The keffiyeh is one of today's latest fashion accessories. However, there have been recent objections to its use, claiming that the use of scarfs that resemble the keffiyeh symbolizes pro-Palestinian jihad.

The keffiyeh is a traditional Arab headdress. Later, it inspires the version of a scarf that is hang around the neck. Usually in black and white or red and white, the keffiyeh has become one of fashion's latest accessories. Interested in political symbolisms or not, the keffiyeh has been a chic fashion accessory especially among young Westerners.

In Australia, wearing of keffiyeh has become a source of harassment for some, as people believed that they carry anti-Jewish sentiments. A Jewish-owned clothing label is even criticized for advertising keffiyehs which are regarded as symbol of Arab terrorist movements.

Amidst all the clamors, Jewish community leaders have said that the reaction is unwarranted.

“Most people would be unaware of its connotation for Muslims and Jews, and it’s therefore, clearly being worn as a fashion item. If people choose to wear one for whatever reason, that is their choice.”

So if you love wearing those trendy keffiyeh fashion accessories but fears for your dear life as it is said to symbolize Jihad, take it from the Jewish leaders themselves – wearing of keffiyeh is a non-issue.
