The Skinny Food Chain

While models are have been criticized for starting the waif look, more Hollywood actresses are become thinner and thinner in order to fit into the same designer gowns as seen on the runways worn by skinny models, and are affecting the perceptions of young women.

Some stars that are known to be quite skinny include Ellen Pompeo of "Grey's Anatomy", Keira Knightly of "Pirates of the Caribbean", and Angelina Jolie, who has recently lost her buff Lara Croft look.

The former supermodel and talk show host, Tyra Banks, was recently mocked by critics as being "fat" when paparazzi photos of her in a bathing suit became released. Indeed, while she is no longer the same weight as she was when she posed on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Tyra Banks is still far from "fat" and asserts her confidence that if she truly has low self-esteem, she'd be trying to lose weight already.

While it's nice to know that Tyra is accepting her curves, young women across the world still feel necessitated to lose weight. It's apparent that from the runway to the red carpet to the streets, such beauty standards are trickling down into mainstream culture. Super-skinniness may be the norm on the runway and in parts of Hollywood, but it should not become the "norm" for beauty among young women everywhere.
